Kindergarten to College (K2C) is the first publicly funded, universal children’s college savings account program in the United States. K2C is now available in every every San Francisco public elementary school.
Tricia and her husband are the parents of a K2C first grader. They have lived in San Francisco for nearly ten years. Tricia first heard about the K2C program when she was registering her daughter for kindergarten, and was pleasantly surprised. Tricia says “I thought it sounded too good to be true, a free college savings account with a $50 seed deposit and ability to earn matching funds”.
Times are tight, but Tricia and her husband prioritize saving for college. They set-up a monthly direct deposit into their now first grader’s K2C account, first putting in $5 per month. When we asked about any thoughts for other K2C parents, Tricia noted that college seems far off, but it’s important to start saving now. She also recommended setting up direct deposit, so your family does not need to think too much about making the deposit every month. Lastly, Tricia also likes to speak often about college with her daughter, as she says, “Saving for college and talking about college helps create that expectation for your child”.
