Oakland Promise

At all key stages of a child’s life – birth, entering elementary school, middle school, high school, and college – Oakland Promise is supporting children with the expectation, skills and resources to complete college and be successful in the career of their choice.

Launched in January 2016, by the City of Oakland, CA Mayor’s Office, the Oakland Promise is both an emerging social movement and a set of concrete resources designed to help children and families save for college expenses, building financial know how, and connect to needed support systems and resources. Currently, 670 students are attending college with scholarships and persistence supports; $5.5M in multi-year scholarships have been awarded; 90%+ first-year completion rate for the senior class of 2016; and 500+ mentors are provided to college students.
